International Day of Peace
Adam Assou, Year 11
On the 21st of September 2016, The English International School celebrated the International Day of Peace. The entire school gathered around on the school field, held each other’s hands and formed a circle. In that circle we had a moment of silence for peace and recent tragedies, so we all joined in and sang together. This symbolized that the bond that each of us had with peace was stronger than any kind of negative emotion like anger or depression.
“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” – Dalai Lama
Peace is compromise and it is only as strong as its provider. If there’s a chance for peace then everyone has to be willing to make sacrifices. Furthermore, peace is only as strong as its provider means that the person who is trying to accomplish and succeed in a situation that involves peace has to have a firm hand and believe in his or her cause.
Mutual understanding is a major key in achieving peace. Mutual understanding is vital because both parties need to come to a neutral agreement that won’t cause any conflict in the future or upset anyone else. There needs to be a neutral line so that whenever someone crosses it, then it’s easier to solve by discussion than force. The only way to have mutual understanding is to have an honest conversation.
Peace is possible. If everyone makes an effort and talks about their personal problems and other general situations that concern them and stick to the ideology of compromise, then we take one step closer to peace. Sadly, these days, violence is nearly everywhere. Whether it’s on television or on your phones or laptops, it’s inevitable not to see at least one article that doesn’t exhibit violence.
In conclusion, this year’s International Day of Peace reminded us how blessed we truly are. Thus, it should be our number one priority to make it even better next year by spreading more peace in the world.
“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.” – John Lennon
