Adventures of Agriculture
Mathilde Richter, Year 5
Insects: Dr. Georg, a scientist, introduced us to the wonderful world of insects. In the laboratory, we saw over 200 specimens, including different species of butterflies, moths, cockroaches, stick insects, bees, and ants. Each specimen's unique features were captivating, but the metallic cockroach stunned me the most. We also observed spiders, though Dr. Georg clarified they are not insects. One of the primary reasons for studying insects is to understand how to control or eliminate harmful ones. Did you know that a fruit fly possesses over 100 eye pixels? To learn more, visit I.I.T.A!
Vegetable Fields: Afterward, our guide, Mr. Karim, led us to the enormous vegetable fields. These fields were impressive and enormous. Mr. Karim first took us to the greenhouse, where the warm environment helped the growth of tomatoes, okra, and peppers. We then moved to the open fields, which were huge and cultivated with various vegetables like corn, pepper, beans, and AFRICAN LETTUCE! Do you know this plant? Again go to IITA and see! Mr. Karim explained that these crops were not intended for sale but for demonstrating plant growth.
Mini Farm: Our final stop was the mini farm, home to adorable bunnies and guinea fowls, alongside beautiful chickens, catfishes.
This was a very exciting and educational field trip for us all. Thank you IITA!
