International Day
Vera Houndjagoh, Year 11
International Day is a tradition in The English International School. It is celebrated every year, and the purpose is to embrace different cultures. On this special day, different cultural attires are worn, food from many parts of the world is brought in, and presentations are given by the various nationalities that are in the school, and national anthems are sung.
This year was my first International Day, and I could feel how magical it was. Everyone had on amazing outfits, from nearly all the continents in the world. Dishes were brought in and kept in their various continents, which were set up in the classrooms. Passports were also distributed to each student to be able to travel from one continent to another. The food was amazing, and the act of sharing was the main goal of the event.
After eating, every class was told to go to the field. Presentations, dances and other aspects which showed one’s culture were there. I was mesmerised. For that, I can say that I am proud to be an EIS student.
Shilo Fanou, Year 11
On 30th January, my school organised an International Day. On this occasion, I wore my traditional clothes to affirm my identity. Other students were also in their traditional attire, and it was quite amazing. The aim of this day, from my point of view, is to show our diversity and to emphasise each culture’s value. This is really a great idea because our school is an international school, with several cultures represented.
Going back to what happened on this day, a lot of food was brought in at this occasion. For the different continents, each classroom was responsible for representing one continent. Our classroom, Year 11, represented Asia. The variety of food for Asia was surprising. Overall, our class did its best. At 1:15 p.m., everybody was at the field. Once at the field, it was another show. The countries offered unforgettable entertainment in various ways. All in all, International Day was a remarkable event.
Miral Massry, Year 4
International Day was last week. On International Day we wore mufti. In the morning, we did our dictation. After the dictation, we had music. We then had our snacks. Then came the fun part, which was the fashion parade, where we showed off our outfits, sang and told facts about our countries. After we finished the parade, we shared our traditional food. Some people got samosas, waffles and zatar bakings called manakeesh. The International Day was so fun!
