Making Masks in Years 4 and 5
In Years 4 and 5 we have been making masks. We started by making plans to work out different ideas. We made six different designs altogether before we decided on our favourite.
Once we had decided on our favourite we made sure our plan showed us exactly how we wanted our finished masks to look.
The masks were made from old plastic bottles. Some of the class were able to find them at home and some we bought in the market. They were cut in half to make the correct part for making a mask.
Once we had all chosen the shape mask we wanted to make we started to cover it in papier mâché. This is ripped up paper soaked in glue paste. We covered our masks about three times and then left them to dry.
The next stage was painting and decorating our masks. We tried to do two layers of paint so the colours were really vibrant. Then we decorated some of them with motifs or patterns, or with “jewels”.
Once they were finished we covered the whole thing with a mixture of glue and water. This acts like a varnish to make them shiny and also stronger.
Here are some photos of us at work and also our finished masks. We are very proud of them……and it is a great way to reuse old rubbish!!!
